Han Kyoul (pronounced han gy-oul) is a name given to me by my friend, Kim Sung Hee. Sung Hee was my student in Seoul, Korea at YoungDungPo ELS. During the first class, I introduced my name, Douglas Mullin, and then told the class that they must ask questions to get to know me. Sung Hee asked if I had been given a Korean name. I said no but you can give me one. She explained that a name in Korea is very important and that she would need time to decide on an appropriate name. A person’s name should describe who they are or want to be. By the end of the month, Sung Hee and I made arrangements to continue working together. She was to give me Korean lessons and I would help her practice English. She asked if she could continue thinking about the name she would give me. Well, six months passed and my teaching contract was almost over with my departure from Korea imminent before Sung Hee gave me my Korean name. It means “unchanging” and she told me that it was her wish for me to remain unchanged in my love for God.
